Why Self-Care is Important

Why Self-Care is Important Self-Care

Self-care is actively taking care of our mental, emotional, and physical health. This activity is so important especially in the fast paced, high stress world that we live in. I feel women especially need self-care. We take so much onto our shoulders, I don’t know why. As women we feel like we have to carry the burdens of the world, and we feel like we have to be perfect. We are as flawed and imperfect as everyone else as hard as it is to admit. When do we stop holding ourselves to these unrealistic standards? As a result, we beat ourselves up when we are unable to meet them.

Self-Care Responsibility

As women, mothers and wives we fill our days handling our responsibilities to work, kids, and significant others. The expectations are heavy, and consequently we are exhausted at the end of the day. The exhaustion is not just physical, but mental and emotional as well. Part of self-care is accepting responsibility for our own well-being. My favorite piece of advice I like to hand out is “you can’t keep pouring into a cup with a whole in it”. We keep emptying our cup into others and at the end of the day our cups are empty. I am guilty of giving until my cup is empty because I keep giving into this false sense of obligation to take care of everyone.

Self-Care…There’s Freedom In It…
Necessity of Taking Care of Ourselves

Every now and again I stop to look around for someone to take care of me. Guess what? No one is there. Am I surprised? No, I am not because I am an old hand at this. intellectually I know being on this hamster wheel is getting me nowhere, but it is hard to break habits built over a lifetime. What’s going on outside in the world makes self-care a necessity! Between Covid-19, Isolation, the political strife happening outside our doors and whatever personal issues and situations we are each dealing with now is setting us up for an explosion that may have lasting consequences for each of us. Being a homebody by nature it was fun at first, but being home bound for four months has been a bit much.

How Do I do This Self-Care Thing

Working from home, homeschooling, and trying to keep a six-year-old entertained while quarantined are added stressors these days. It’s a wonder that it’s all catching up to me now. There were some other things I am not ready to talk about, but there were some trying moments these last four months. I’m pretty sure my story is all too common these days, but the last couple of days has been rough. The one thing nobody can accuse me of is not being self-aware, I am in a weird place emotionally. I know what triggered my emotional upheaval, but I am unsure of how to deal with it. My emotional chaos had made me realize how much I have neglected taking care of myself. I need to do better; I can’t keep giving of myself with little reciprocation.

The big question is how do you carve of a space of your own, how do you prioritize your needs and the needs of others, and how do you keep these things once you find it?. These are important questions that need to be answered. Everyone has different needs and only you can discover what works best for you. Our feelings are valid, and it is not selfish to take care of yourself. Not having equal reciprocity on places the responsibility squarely on us, or if you do self-care is important for optimal health.

Help me out folks, where should I begin my self-care journey? I̢۪m working on my diet but the other stuff is a lot harder.
