Getting back into the fasting lane isn’t as easy as it was initially and I don’t know why. Last year I proudly lost 25lbs following keto and fasting. I was inspired by watching videos of Dr.Berg on YouTube. I don’t know how I found Dr. Berg, it was completely by accident. He changed my outlook on my health goals. Listening to his calm and confident voice he made me believe I could make significant changes. He inspires confidence. I had a voracious appetite to learn and he was a great teacher! Through Dr Berg I began with Keto.
The Journey ContinuesDr. Berg was just the beginning, because I soon discovered Dr. Ken Berry. Dr. Berry was amazing! I learned so much. He gave out as lot of information in a no nonsense way. I respected him because of his bluntness while telling his views the truth about how our food was killing us. Both doctors advocated advantages of the keto lifestyle, but Dr. Berry put emphasis on a Carnivore form of keto. Thecarnivore diet and ketogenic diet both permit protein and fat while restricting carbs, but the carnivore is considerably more extreme. Because you aren’t eating any plant foods at all, your carb intake is virtually zero, and in a ketogenic diet, the emphasis is on fat.
My brain is overflowing, and I’m riding high off of all the good things I’ve been learning. I’m excited at this point and feeling confident. I was so sure I could do this! It sounds easy enough if you watch the videos I posted above. The hardest part at least for me was the limited menu of things to eat. I should clarify “limited menuâ€, the menu is not necessarily limited but it cuts out a lot of unhealthy things which is a good thing. Here is where I begin…again.
Getting Back into the Fasting LaneDay 1 was a failure I only made it 32 hours. My goal was 48 hours, I did not feel hungry but my unhealthy dependence on food kicked in. It does not help when you can burn in the kitchen and you have a family to feed. Cooking for them makes fasting and eating healthy sometimes difficult, but I want to be healthy. My desire to live and raise my daughter to adulthood is a big incentive. I was diagnosed as diabetic Type 2 more than a decade ago and I will admit to having poor blood sugar control. I don’t eat the way I should or exercise the way I should.
The only time in recent memory that I did well with getting healthy was when I was fasting and eating keto. I lost weight and I was able to control my blood sugar without medication. I was so proud of myself, and now I’m just disappointed. Consistency has always been my biggest roadblock. I know that I can do better because I know there are consequences if I don’t. If you are having the same struggles, please know you are not alone, and I understand better than most this is not an easy mission.
Day 2Day 2 began at 9pm on 6/30. I intended to start at 6pm but my daughter wanted us to make brownies, and since I am on a mission to get healthy and lose weight, we made keto brownies. As I am writing this, I am 12 hours in to my latest fast and will likely make this one 24 hours or longer if I can make it. So, I did not make it. I ended this fast at 18 hours. What I have learned is that this is process.
I have been sticking to Keto restricting my meals to one or two meals a day with the goal of becoming strictly OMAD. OMAD means One meal a day. There is lot of research out there if you are wondering if eating once a day is healthy. It can be hard sometimes to just eat one meal because restricting your eating to one meal means there are a lot of nutrients you must cram into that one meal. Prior to falling off the wagon I was fasting 23 hours a day and eating within that one-hour window. Unfortunately eating within just one hour left me feeling bloated and overfull, but my blood sugar levels were near normal. Check out Dr. Berg’s video on OMAD.
23 Benefits of OMADGetting Back Into the Fasting Lane It is Not A FailureThe conclusion to this little experiment is I failed, but I didn’t. Instead of completing a 48 fast I completed 63 hours. In intention was to fast for 48 hours without ending until I got to the 49th hour. I don’t feel too bad because 63 hours is still a victory. My random stop and start times made it a little difficult to document this whole thing. Might try making a video next time and doesn’t that sound fun!
Until next time…Here’s some tip on fasting safely!
